WHERE TO PARK?!?

Parking is easy and accessible at the beach access point of New Brighton State Beach. DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO MUNICIPAL PARKING LOT:

From Highway 1, exit Park Avenue (exit 436) from CA 1-S.
At the end of off-ramp, turn right on Park Avenue going toward the ocean.
Follow signage to New Brighton Beach State Park.
We’ll meet at our blue concession trailer to distribute gear and set up for our paddle session!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

We bring you a wetsuit if you ask for one
If you request one at your online class registration, we’ll be bringing you a “spring suit” wetsuit (short sleeve and short legs).  Since we’re paddling on the ocean, a westuit is fairly common to wear to make sure you stay warm. However, many people who regularly paddle on the ocean forgo the wetsuit, and just paddle in trunks and a shirt (see next paragraph)

Other options?
Spring suits work well for most people who want a wetsuit, but if the weather looks cool for your class, or you are particularly sensitive to cold we would be happy to bring you a full suit instead – just request one at least 24 hours in advance. If the weather looks really warm, and you are feeling pretty confident, feel free to just wear beach shorts/surf trunks and a lightweight top for sun protection (like a nylon or polyester biking or running top). That is what experienced paddlers normally wear on warm days.

What to wear underneath?
Women may want to wear a bikini underneath the wetsuit as it makes changing in and out of the suit easy. Men, surf trunks are a bit bulky to wear beneath a wetsuit, so you may also wear your birthday suit (or a speedo) under your wetsuit.  Worry not, the suits are thoroughly laundered after each use with an all-natural, microbial based wetsuit cleaner that leaves the suits fully clean and sanitized.

How and where will we change into the wetsuits?
We change on site. Everyone is provided a clean “wetsuit changing poncho” which covers your entire body while changing in and out of the wetsuit. Surfers have been using these for years.  We have on site storage where the clothes you change out of are stored. However, it is recommended you not bring any valuables down to the beach – just you and the clothes you’re wearing. Leave your valuables (phone, wallet, etc) locked in your trunk at the municipal parking lot – the parking lot is adjacent to the Police Department.

IMPORTANT TRAFFIC NOTICE

Traffic into Santa Cruz and Capitola is normally very heavy on summer weekends. Please allow ample time to arrive in Capitola, get into New Brighton and park- we want to make sure everyone is able to enjoy the full length of their class on time. Refunds or rescheduling are not possible without 48 hours notice.

MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT?

Participants in the Ocean Intro to SUP Class must be at least 13 years of age.  The parent or guardian must decide if their minor can safely participate in this class.  If you are unsure if your youth will be able to keep up wiht a group or feel comfortable in the ocean, it is recommended that you not register the minor for the class.  Thank you.

Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours in advance of the class for a refund or a rescheduling. Cancellation due to weather or high surf will result in a full refund.
